Instrument Proficiency Check

An Instrument Proficiency Check (IPC) is a required evaluation for pilots who have not met the recent IFR currency requirements within the preceding six months. Conducted by a certified flight instructor or examiner, the IPC assesses a pilot’s proficiency in instrument flight operations, including navigation, communication, approach procedures, and decision-making under Instrument Flight Rules (IFR). Successfully completing an IPC restores IFR currency, ensuring the pilot meets safety and competency standards for instrument flying.

During the IPC, we’ll review and practice essential IFR tasks and procedures to ensure you’re confident and proficient in operating under Instrument Flight Rules.

The required tasks include:

  • Holding Procedures: Demonstrating entry and execution of holding patterns.

  • Instrument Approaches: Performing a variety of approaches, including precision (ILS) and non-precision (RNAV, VOR, or LOC).

  • Missed Approaches: Executing missed approach procedures and proper coordination with ATC.

  • Partial Panel Flight: Managing flight without primary instruments to simulate equipment failures.

  • Navigation and Intercepting: Tracking and intercepting courses using navigation systems.

  • Recovery from Unusual Attitudes: Regaining controlled flight from unexpected aircraft attitudes.

We’ll structure the IPC to focus on both the areas required by regulation and any specific tasks you’d like to improve. By the end of the session, you’ll have restored your IFR privileges and regained the confidence to fly safely in instrument conditions.
